How to Have a Kick-A** Session

How can I improve my neurofeedback sessions?
This is a question we get over and over, and the answer is fairly simple.
Neurofeedback is essentially exercise for your brain. Just as you would prepare your body for a workout at the gym, you need to prepare your brain for a neurofeedback session.

1. REST
The night before a neurofeedback session it is important to get a good night’s rest. We want you performing at your best and the only way to do that is if you have given your body and brain the rest it needs. As you know, one of the things we ask during a session is that you sit as still as possible. When you are tired you tend to fidget more, it is a reflexive way for your body to keep itself awake and functioning. After a restful night you will find that you are able to relax and be still.

2. HYDRATE
Since the body is approximately 70% water, it is crucial that you keep it hydrated in order for all organs to function as they should. Staying hydrated also boosts energy, which is beneficial for every type of workout.  So, avoid caffeine and sugary drinks—“energy” drinks included—and fill your tank with water.

3. PROTEIN
Protein is crucial in brain function as it provides your body with amino acids that are used to create neurotransmitters—your brain’s communication center. For this reason, it is important to provide your body with the amount of protein it needs, especially on neurofeedback days. Never go into a session hungry, not only will we all be distracted by your growling stomach, but you will also feel tired and sluggish, which oftentimes leads to a less than a stellar session. Eggs, meat, cheese, nuts, load up!

4. RELAX
So you’ve done all the prep prior to your session–fully rested, well hydrated, and full of protein–now what? RELAX! One of the keys to a successful session is to sit back and relax. Try and clear your mind of everything that is stressful waiting for you outside of our office doors. Our office is your sanctuary for the next 30 minutes. Tension is often held in the jaw and on the forehead, be sure to breathe and relax all those tiny muscles in your face. Relax and let your brain work.

5. FOCUS
Relax and focus, you will hear your technician say these words multiple times throughout your session. Focus.
The only thing that matters for the next 30 minutes is what you are doing right here and now, whether it’s watching a movie or playing a video game, be present. While watching a movie be thinking about what is happening at that particular moment and focus on little details such as the eyes or lips of a character, or the flowers on a tree. Focusing on the details will keep your mind from wandering.

By following these five steps you will be doing everything you can possibly do to always have a Kick Butt Neurofeedback
Session. RELAX and FOCUS, good luck!
